Expert Advice - Choosing a Carpet Style

Jim Aaron, our VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, shares some information on the different carpet styles that are available.

Why Carpet?

For those who love having plenty of choices, carpeting is an excellent option. But it’s more than simply beautiful: a carefully-chosen carpet can help you achieve significant savings on your utility bills, since its inherently insulating. Your new rug will bring ongoing value to your home, while always staying in style.

Types of Carpet

Carpeting has something for everyone: whether you need a product that can coexist with pets and kids, or one that can withstand constant foot traffic. Getting well-versed in carpet terminology is an important initial step in finding a product that’s your perfect fit.

A carpet’s fibers, also called “pile,” will affect your rug’s overall performance, look, and feel. For instance: polyester carpeting is soft and strong, while wool carpeting is rough to the touch, but soothing for homeowners with allergy issues.

Here’s the general lowdown on all of the different carpet types:

Frieze or “shag” carpeting is very soft and casual, with its long and twisted fibers. It has a deep pile and trendy look.

Level loop carpeting is very dense and sturdy. Its short fibers make it a great carpet for busy settings.

Patterned carpeting is intricate in appearance, with its alternating loops used to create formal patterns.

Textured carpeting is quite durable and rough to the touch. It is popular in family rooms and other casual spaces.

Plush carpeting is velvety to the touch, lending it a soft and formal appearance.
